John Dahlgren, son of Olof & Helena Dahlgren, was born on December 5, 1884, in Norra Transtrand, Dahlby Parish, Värmland, Sweden. In 1890, at the age of five, he left Sweden with his mother and two younger brothers to meet up with his father who had migrated to America the previous year. The family united in Minnesota, ending up in Roseau County.

His name is listed with other family members in census records from Malung, Roseau County, Minnesota, in 1895, 1905, and 1910. But not in the 1900 census. That year he is listed as a “Servant” and living with the Axel Lundquist family in Vega Township, Marshall County, Minnesota. (see line 70 in the document below) It also states, in the Occupation column, that he was “at school”.

The Minnesota Official Marriage System web site lists a Marriage Certificate Number E342 in Roseau County for John Dahlgren and Hulda Bjur, with a Marriage Date of 06/14/1920. Hulda was the widow of John Ludwig Bjuhr (Bjur) who died in 1916 in Swede Township, LaMoure County, North Dakota.
In the 1930 US Census for Swede Township in LaMoure County, North Dakota, John is listed as the husband of Hulda O. Dahlgren, and living in the same household are Palmer Bjur (son of Hulda) and Mamie G. Bjur (daughter of Hulda).

John Dahlgren died on January 25, 1935, in Kulm, North Dakota.

From the obituary in the Roseau, Minnesota newspaper –
“JOHN DAHLGREN LAID TO REST IN SALEM CEMETERY
Funeral service for John Dahlgren, whose death occurred at Kulm, N. Dak., a week ago last Thursday was held in the Salem Church in Malung, Saturday afternoon, beginning at 2 o’clock. Many sympathizing friends of the family attended. The sermon was preached by Rev. A. G. Dahle of Wannaska, and the Stafford Male Quartet sang. Mrs. Albin Hedlund presided at the organ. Burial was made in Salem cemetery. . . .
John Dahlgren was the son of Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Dahlgren, who survive him. He was born in Sweden and was at the time of his death fifty years, one month and nineteen days old. He came with his parents to America in 1890 and in 1891 the family moved to Roseau county. He has made his home in Kulm, N. Dak., for some time prior to his death, and there is where his widow and two step-children, Palmer Bjur and Mrs. Albert Larson are now residing. They did not come here, as the funeral services had been held there before the body was sent here for burial.
Besides the aged parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Axel Dahlgren and Oscar Dahlgren, Mrs. Peter Espe and Mrs. Frank Thompson of Malung.”
