Luverne Hviding
February 28, 1934 — February 19, 2014

Luverne E. Hviding, age 79, Crookston, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the Villa St. Vincent, Crookston, with her family at her side.

Luverne Ethel Hviding was born on February 28, 1934 in her home east of Borup, Minnesota, daughter of Anton and Ella Dahl. She grew up and was educated at Golden Rod Country School and Borup High School. She graduated in May 1951.

On June 26, 1954 she married Kenneth Reuben Hviding. She joined Ken through his Army years living at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort Hood, Texas. Following two years in Lichfield, North Dakota, they moved to Crookston, Minnesota where she spent the rest of her life.

As a housewife and mother, Luverne spent the early years of her marriage raising her four children. In later years, she spread her wings through many hours employed at Dalhgren’s. She and Ken enjoyed many days together as volunteers at the Polk County Historical Society and the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge. Along with her family, she spent many years enjoying the Hviding family farm south of Mentor, Minnesota. Throughout her life she was actively involved in the Crookston Covenant Church. There she served as organist and accompanist, Sunday School teacher and was actively involved with the ministries of Covenant Women. Through these roles friends came to know and cherish her quiet and gentle spirit and her steady consistent faith in God. While Luverne also enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, and Suduko, her greatest joys came from quiet reading, holding a new born baby, and spending time with the family she loved.

Luverne is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth of Crookston, two brothers and one sister, four children, eight grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Anton and Ella Dahl; sister: Dorthy Mae Dahl; brothers: David Dahl and Leland Dahl.

Although Luverne loved flowers, she loved people more. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to Evangelical Covenant Church or Covenant Women, Crookston, Minnesota or Bluewater Covenant Bible Camp, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.

Kenneth “Ken” R. Hviding was born November 16, 1929 in rural Perley, MN, to Krueger and Emma (Skiple) Hviding. He grew up on the family farm in Woodside Township within view of Maple Lake, southeast of Mentor, MN. He married Luverne Ethel Dahl, the love of his life, on June 26, 1954 in Jevnaker Lutheran Church, Borup, MN. Ken left the farm, with Luverne at his side, to serve in the Army at Leonard Wood, MO, Fort Knox, KY, and Fort Hood, TX. Applying skills he learned in the service, he began his 36 year career as an automotive and diesel mechanic at Strinden’s Hardware in Litchville, ND in 1956. They moved to Crookston, MN in 1959 where Ken worked for Saul Motors, the local Ford dealership. In 1961, Ken was hired by Crookston Public School District 593 to maintain its fleet of school buses for the next 31 years until his retirement in 1992. Following Luverne’s passing in 2014, Ken moved to reside at Scandia Shores in Shoreview, MN where he formed new friendships, learned to share his faith in new and inspiring ways and made many courageous adjustments to life in the big city. He had two great joys at the end of his journey. The first was to tell someone his story about God’s love for him. The second was to listen to someone else’s story of the same. Most dear to his heart were his family members who he prayed for daily.

Throughout his life, Ken enjoyed all things mechanical including building, fixing, and refurbishing just about anything. From building the family “garden tractor” out of scrounged auto parts to re-fashioning an obsolete school bus into a purposeful and fully-functional tow truck, Ken’s mechanical aptitude and imagination were hallmarks of his craft. He spent several years “hobby farming” on the rocky fields of the home place. He later graduated to “real farming” in the Red River Valley, working on the Dragseth family farm near Eldred following his retirement. He and Luverne enjoyed many days together as volunteers at the Polk County Historical Society and the Rydell National Wildlife Refuge. Along with his family, he spent many years enjoying the Woodside family farm.
Most important to Ken was his faith and God’s ever-present love and grace throughout his life. He was an active member of the Crookston Covenant Church where he lived out his faith serving as Sunday school teacher, board member, church chairman and prayer warrior. One of his greatest joys was his work and attendance through the years at Bluewater Bible Camp north of Grand Rapids, MN, a camp that has been instrumental in changing young lives for over 50 years.

Mostly, Ken loved his family. He is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren, one great grandchild, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his wife Luverne, parents Krueger and Emma, sister Alpha Johnson and brother-in-law Morris Johnson.

Ken’s final resting place will be Rodnes Lutheran Cemetery near Erskine, Minnesota.
